Roll of Honour: 1915 250th Tunnel Company (2nd Lieutenant), Royal Engineers (Lieutenant) Charles Thomas (Tommy) Main Husband was born in Richmond, Victoria, in 1891 to Charles Edward Husband (1862-1939) and Mary Chalmers Finlay Main (1858-1945). Charles Edward Husband was the Shire President of Nunawading, served as a Nunawading Shire Councillor (1902-1908 and 1911-1917) and was one of the original members of the inaugural Shire of Blackburn and Mitcham Council for Tunstall Riding from September 1925 until August 1929. Charles' son, Charles Thomas Main, was a surveyor in the FMS prior to his enlistment with the London Regiment in World War I. From 1915, Charles Thomas Main served with the 250th Tunnelling Company and subsequently attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, and later Captain. The 250th Tunnelling Company was formed in October, 1915, in Rouen, and was assigned to relieve the 177th Company. The group was responsible for the excavation of deep-level mines (Petit Bois, Peckham and Spanbroekmolen) under the Messines Ridge. At age 48, Charles was a registered First Class Passenger on board the Ulysses which departed from Liverpool, England, on 25th November, 1939, for Melbourne. He was accompanied on this voyage by his wife Edith (aged 39) daughter Doreen (aged 5) and son Anthony (aged 2). At the time, the family lived at Gordon Cottage, Fetcham Park, Leatherhead, Surrey, and Charles was a member of the Colonial Survey Service with the intention to go on to Malaya. Charles was killed by Japanese soldiers during an escape attempt off the South Coast of Java. Name recorded on the 'Mitcham War Memorial'.
