Upon her arrival to Australia in August 1955, Lady Hutton professed to be fond of gardening and was favourably described as a “most attractive person with an easy friendly manner” with “blue-eyed, grey-haired with rose-petal smooth skin” (The Argus, Wed 24 August 1955). Prior to succeeding Sir Eric Speed as Managing Director of the Anglo-Australasian Corporation Pty. Ltd in mid 1955 whilst simultaneously serving as Director of the North British and Mercantile Insurance Co. Ltd, Sir Maurice Hutton had served as head of the British Food Mission to the United States of America, whilst Lady Hutton had worked with the British Purchasing Mission and later, the British Army Staff Mission in the Pentagon (The Argus, Thu 27 Oct 1955; The Argus, Wed 24 August 1955). Whilst the couple had resided predominantly in England, they also lived in Washington between 1941-1948.
