Edward Bishop (1844-1902)
Edward Bishop was a builder from Vermont with an office and yard located in Hawthorn. In 1884, Bishop acquired land in Vermont on which he constructed the imposing ‘Uplands’ estate on top of a hill with frontage to both Canterbury and Terrara Road. Edward, his wife Maria Bishop (nee Matthews) (1843-1927) and their children; including a daughter, Alice, maintained an orchard and farm on the property for over ten years; enabling them to be largely self-sufficient (Alves, 2010). Four servants were also engaged for this purpose. |
