Joseph Thornton Tweddle (1865-1943)
Born in England in 1865, Joseph Thornton Tweddle, businessman and philanthropist, arrived in Nunawading aged 40 in 1909 (Tweddle, 2021; Fendley, 1965, p. 24). He lived in his newly constructed stately home in Springvale Road near the present-day Nunawading Railway Station. The home was named ‘Winlaton’ in homage to his birthplace of the same name in Durham, England (Tweddle, 2021; Fendley, 1965, p. 24). At the time, Tweddle had established himself as director of the Andrews Bros Pty Ltd woollen warehouse situated in Flinders Lane; a title which he held from 1899 after previously having joined the firm as an accountant in 1896 (Tweddle, 2021). |
